About the Florida Lottery

The Florida Lottery was established following a 1986 constitutional amendment approved by voters to generate additional revenue for public education. It officially began operations on January 12, 1988, launching with a $1 scratch-off game called Millionaire.

Key Historical Milestones

1988: Sales of the first scratch-off reached $95 million in just 12 days, setting a national record at the time. The flagship FLORIDA LOTTO game launched in April 1988.

1997: The Bright Futures Scholarship Program was created, using lottery funds to provide college scholarships for Florida students.

2009: Florida joined the multi-state Powerball game, with its headquarters in Tallahassee becoming the official drawing site.

2013: The state joined Mega Millions in May, completing its lineup of major national jackpot games.

2023: Florida recorded one of the largest lottery wins in history when a $1.602 billion Mega Millions jackpot ticket was sold in Neptune Beach.

Today, the Florida Lottery continues to support education funding while offering a variety of draw games and scratch-offs to players across the state.
