About the Georgia Lottery

The Georgia Lottery was established after a 1992 constitutional amendment and officially began sales on June 29, 1993. Championed by then-Governor Zell Miller, it was designed specifically to fund educational initiatives, primarily the HOPE Scholarship and the state's Pre-K program.

Key Historical Milestones

1993: The lottery launched with record-breaking first-week sales of over $52 million. The first instant games were Instant Cash and Georgia Millionaire.

1996: Georgia helped launch The Big Game, which later evolved into Mega Millions.

2010: After a period of exclusivity with Mega Millions, Georgia officially rejoined Powerball, offering both major multi-state games.

2011: The Zell Miller Scholarship was created as a higher-tier merit award within the HOPE program, covering 100% of tuition for students with higher GPA and SAT/ACT requirements.

2025-2026: In December 2025, the lottery reached a historic milestone of $30 billion total generated for education since its inception.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Why is the Cash Option different than the advertised Jackpot?

The Georgia Lottery Corporation advertises its jackpots at the estimated 30-year annuity for Mega Millions and Powerball. When players choose the annuity option on their Mega Millions, Powerball jackpot prize, the Georgia Lottery pays the prize out over 30 years by buying U.S. Government Treasury Securities, which earn interest and mature annually over the time period. That annual return is the amount winners receive each year for annuity period. With Cash Option, the Lottery takes the amount of money that would have been invested and pays it directly to the winner in one payment. Both payment options have federal and state taxes deducted from them.

Q.What if a group or lottery pool wins a jackpot prize?

The GLC cannot advise you about structuring lottery pools because they are arrangements made between private parties. If you decide to play in a group, prizes may be claimed by a single legal entity, such as a corporation, partnership or trust. Groups, families, clubs or organizations can designate one individual or legal entity to receive a prize payment, or if the prize amount won is $5,001 or greater, individual prize payments (of $601 or greater) can be made to each group member, up to 25 members.

Q.How long do I have to claim a prize?

All draw game tickets (Cash Pop, Mega Millions, Powerball, Fantasy 5, Georgia FIVE, CASH 4, CASH 3, KENO! and Quick Win) are valid for 180 days after the draw date. Also, of this money, $200,000 is transferred annually to the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities for education and treatment programs for problem gambling.

Q.How are jackpot prizes paid?

The GLC's Board of Directors adopted game rules that determine the criteria for payments of all jackpots. Those rules provide that Mega Millions, Powerball have jackpots paid out in 30 payments over 29 years. The jackpot prize pool is invested in government securities so that the winners, in effect, receive both the principal and interest on their prizes. If Cash Option is selected on either of those games, cash is paid in one lump sum.
